A, B, C . . Letter of the Day!

We have started our letter of the day program this week!  We have briefly introduced A, B, and C so far and will continue with D & E for the rest of the week. For each letter, we will focus on the sound and formation of the letter.  It will be a brief introduction through the entire alphabet.  Once letter of the day is compelete, then we will move onto to our letter of the week program.  During letter of the week, we will focus more on the sounds in words, letter formation of upper and lower case letters, and various literacy activites that go along with each letter.

Letter B
Yesterday, we read the story The Wheels on the School Bus by Mary Alice Moore.  This is one of my favorite letter B books.  The students are familiar with the tune and it's a lot of fun.  Check out the adorable school buses the class made yesterday!  I love how they brighten up our door!

Homework Information

What a great start to the second week of school!  The class is doing a nice job learning our routines and epxectations.  Yesterday, some homework was sent home.  In your child's folder, there was a nightly reading record sheet.  Please use this for the next several weeks to log your reading at home.  When students bring it back at the end of September, they will receive a small prize. Please try to read to your child each night for a few minutes.  Research shows that students who are read to become better readers!
Your child also came home with printing homework last night.  If you didn't have time to complete this with your child, please do so this evening and return tomorrow.
My Math:  This week, we began our new math series.  There will be a short math homework sheet almost every night this year.  I won't send math homework on Fridays.  Also, days when we are introducing a new chapter (like yesterday), there will not usually be homework.  PLEASE check your child's folder each night for homework, ensure it is completed correclty, and return it the next day.  This extra practice and reinforcment at home is very important.  I appreciate your support.  As always, please remember to talk with your child about his/her day at school and ask many questions!  And...READ! READ! READ!

FIRST WEEK!

What a wonderful group of Kindergarteners we have in our classroom!  I have loved getting to know them this week!  We wrapped up the week with some review on classroom and school expectations, the 4 Be's and more school "tools" practice (glue, scissors, etc.)  The class had fun playing a math game and getting to use dice for the first time today.  We use dice often for reveiw games in math.  It is a fun way to reinforce concepts for the students!

Color Words

Today in class we focused on the colors and color words.  Learning to read the color words will be one of our first goals in Kindergarten.  We worked together on this today.  We also spent a little more time practicing cutting and disuccsing cutting and coloring expectations in Kindergarten.  This afternoon, we read an apple story and the class colored their favorite color of apple.  We will hang these in the classroom!

REMINDER: PE is tomorrow! Wear tennis shoes! (Friday, August 22)

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom & the 4 Be's

Today in Kindergarten, we visited the library.  The class learned the rules today, but did not check out books yet.  That will come later.  In class, we read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and the students made their own coconut trees.  These are decorating our classroom.  The students did a great job!

We also reviewed the  4 Be's of Whiteside School.  These are an important part of our Character Education Program.  THe 4 Be's are: Be Safe, Be Caring, Be Respectful and Be Responsible.  Ask your child if he/she can name the 4 Be's for you at home.  We made a bee craft this afternoon to go along with our lesson.  These bumble bees definitely help brighten up our classroom!

REMINDER:  Please send snack for 24 students one day this week.  A note was sent home in folders.
PE - Our class will have PE on Friday of this week.  Please have your child wear tennis shoes!
CHARACTER ED SHIRTS:  If you would like to order, please return form and payment by 9/9/14.

Day 2

Another great day in Kindergarten!  Today we went to Music class and the students met Mrs. Brush, the music teacher.  We also read the story, If you Take a Mouse to School by Laura Numeroff.  We discussed all of our learning tools (pencils, crayons, glue, etc.) and how to use them appropriately for our job of learning at school!  The class had fun telling me all of the "tools" their parents use at home to do their jobs. This afternoon, we talked about scissor rules and practiced cutting.  The students had a blast making their snakes! Be sure to ask your child about his/her day at school.

FIRST DAY

Our First Day

We had a great first day in Kindergarten today!  The class learned the expectataions for the hallway, lunch room, playground, etc. this morning during our school wide Character Boot Camp program.

The class enjoyed meeting new friends, eating snack and reading our first story together.  Please ask your child about the story, The Kissing Hand, by Audrey Penn.  I told them they could eat their special treat after they told you the story tonight!
